Both. You can kind of fine tune it to your liking based on fault tolerance and speed. Raid 5 is excellant fault tolerance but a little slow on writes. Raid 1 it a little less fault tolerant but better on reads and writes. You have to decide on a balance. That are a bunch of different raid levels. Each have benefits and drawbacks. I just mentioned two of the many.
