We have 3 exch 2003 servers using 2 smtp connectors. The queues on all 3 exch servers for the smtp, keeps going into retry and the number of items keeps going up. I have restarted the smtp service and that helped for about 1 minute.
Any ideas would be great... Boy I hate exch 2003.......

When you say items are going up are you talking a few messages or thousands? I am wondering if this is leading to something that is being abused. Other things to check is can you telnet out of your network on port 25? Do you use a smart host for message delivery and if so can you telnet that on 25 ? I.e. Is your firewall or ISP preventing your connector sending messages or is the smart host dropping the connetions.

Well right now one is at 10, one is at 55, and the other is at 135 in the queues. But if I hit force connection, some will go for a few seconds, then it goes back to retry

If you look at the items in the queues are they postmaster messages or do they look like spam ? If so check this link out.

No spam or anything like that.
Anyone have any ideas on this why all 3 servers smtp just keeps going to retry?

Did you do the telnet tests. If the queues grow it means they can not bind to an external smtp source to deliver email.

The last time I saw this issue it was due to a memory leak on a cisco 1800 , all it needed was a restart.
