ejb serialization

i was reading

 we cannot send java object over network.

 why we need to serialize java objects to stream to send across different JVM.

what are advantages, uses, disadvantages of serializing.  when, how, why we use it.

I was not clear on this concept. thanks in advance

EJB framework depends on RMI which makes method call on remote object. The call on remote object can't be possible without serialization as we may need to pass the parameters/receive the values from the methods.
