Assuming an iphone has been wiped and starting from afresh, what is the quickest way of downloading all apps again from iTunes (not from backups / downloaded to the PC previously) without having to search for them one by one on iTunes (be in on the computer or via the iphone app store)?

Is there a "download all previously purchase apps function" or a way of viewing all previous purchases and selecting a check box to download them again?

you can do this now after a new change made by apple on App Store on the iPhone.
Simply on your iPhone open AppStore and go to updates, you will find a link for Purchased apps on the top and you can download them easily.

I just noticed that shortly after posting the question.  However, after I select the "download" all apps, it seems to stop at the point when perhaps one of the apps is no longer available on the appstore.

Also  how can I remove rubbish apps I previously downloaded to check out but dont want in the download history so that it automatically downloads again?

this is not allowed and you can't remove it from the list, this is the official apple reply.

I searched for that on the net alot, some people said they sent for apple asking for this and apple reply was "you won't be able to remove them from the purchased folder within the mac application".

check also this link and read the users comments.

Most of the people want apple to keep the history of purchased applications even they are currently not using it.

Because this is still a new feature and iCloud is still under development, I think new features are coming to App store including Delete or Hide purchased application.
