QA (Quality Assurance ) & Deployment administrator

We have a ASP.NET web application with IIS.

We wanted to give our senior QA team member to be our Deployment Administrator as well.

1) What exactly does a Deployment Administrator does ?

2) Any tool or utilities which experts here use ?

3) Are there any web links or screen shots of what exactly the job responsibility of a Deployment administrator would be ?

 Thanks
 Kiran P.

Aaa.. sometimes I just wonder, is it just my CIO purpose this type of Job?

Hi,

I have face the same problem some months ago, most exactly like your's but with additional task, need of Package & Deployment Administrator. Like some kind of new portfolio and we combed the net for it too. From what I found there is no specifically job position like that.Yes there is some using this term especially on Microsoft CRM and Network deployment but truely in software development I couldn't find one.

We did follow a framework from MS, known as MSF, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Solutions_Framework and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb497060.aspx

It is a complete framework, sub to Microsoft Operations Framework, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc506049.aspx. Although MSF does not talking about "Deployment Administartor" per se, the framework have a cycle process of Test (QA) and Release (Deploy).

For the Test cycle, MSF detailed out all the need, from best practive, planning up to UAT and what roles need to get involve on the process in it, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb463142.aspx

So does the deployment phase, a lot of detail in technical and process given, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb463142.aspx

In most situation we use the same model even when working with non-MS deployment. You should read the link I gave you to get the whole idea of what MSF is.

To answer you question, based on MSF:
1. They should do:
-Deploy the solution
-Stabilize the deployment
-Obtain the solution signoff
-Transfer ownership

2. Tools, starting from Visual Studion 2005 - MS have develop team tools (not remember the real name), then in VS 2008 they've changed the name to VS Team Foundation. We went to MS demo of that tools (we really like the SCRUM method showed), very nice tools but you need to learn a lot before you become familiar with VSTF. http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/team-foundation-server/overview

3. Nope, cannot find one that really good for you. The link I gave you just a brief of MSF, you should get a lot detail from this book, http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Solutions-Framework-Essentials-Successful/dp/0735623538

Go and have a look.

Hi,

http://asp.net is very best place to find info about ASP.Net, they have tonns of info in tutorials and even videos. Here maybe a good start for you, http://www.asp.net/web-forms

They are using Visual Studio (VS) Express but it is OK for you to use full version VS (even much more better).

If you are using Visual Studio, there is a build in function VS, here is how to use it, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/20yh9f1b(v=vs.80).aspx

You need to make a sharing or ftp to the folder you want to publish.
