Is there a way to unregister the mswrd632 converter by vbscript or group policy as it is causing problems on multiple machines following wsus pushing out the KB973904 update.

You should be to use Group Policy to delete these values

    For 32-bit versions of Windows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc

    For 64-bit versions of Windows:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc
