Desktop icons disappear and will not re-appear until the PC is restarted one or more times

Desktop icons disappear and will not re-appear until the PC is restarted one or more times.  This is on an XP machine.  It had a virus a while back that was removed.  After that, the desktop icons disappeared and I ran the unhide.exe program which fixed it for some time.  Now we have the problem again intermittently and the PC needs to be restarted multiple times sometimes to get the icons to reappear.  Current virus/malwares scans come up clean.  Any ideas?

Create a new profile (User)  - Log into the new profile
assumming old user is User1  and New user is User2

Copy the desktop shorcuts from c:\documents and Settings\user1\deskop  to c:\doc...\User2\desktop

Restart the system

See if the Icons on the desktop come up right away

If they do you may have a corrupted profile

Just move all your Stuff to the new profile  from User1 to User2

You will neet to move
My Documents
Outlook if applicable

Once it's all moved - restart - test then go in and remove the old profile
Then Check disk for errors and do a defrag
