With a simple google search of "archive.org" the second link is the wikipedia page, which states (first two paragraphs, highlights by me):

The Internet Archive is a non-profit digital library with the stated mission of "universal access to all knowledge".[2][3] It offers permanent storage and access to collections of digitized materials, including websites, music, moving images, and nearly 3 million public domain books. The Internet Archive was founded by Brewster Kahle in 1996. It is a member of the IIPC (International Internet Preservation Consortium).[4]

With offices located in San Francisco, California, USA, and data centers in San Francisco, Redwood City, and Mountain View, California, USA, the Archive's largest collection is its web archive, "snapshots of the World Wide Web". To ensure the stability and endurance of the Internet Archive, its collection is mirrored at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt.[5]

Why must someone host them?  I've seen stories on them and the last I heard, they had their own datacenters.  Any reason you need this info?  Just curious...

I expected that they might be hosted for free by Amazon or Yahoo! or someone. SO I'd like to know whether that is the case, or whether they have their own datacenters, and where their servers are.

Because I want to download a lot of their files and I can do it from different places, so I want to know where they are so I can use the closest one.
