SQL Server Client Side Configuration

Hi All,
I have IBM websphere application server and need to configure a JDBC/database connection for a remote windows SQL server 2008?

What min I have to install at client side to connect to a SQL server database?
Is there anything like Oracle Instant Client (doesn't need a install)  for SQL server.

Thanks

Hi Mate,
That is a brilliant article.

Unfortunately the JBDC drivers will only try and get connection to the database. Sometimes i need something more to debug jdbc connection issues. I am not a developer, i work as a DBA.

I want to know bit more on installing client side tools & configuring remote SQL server connections. At same time , I don't want to install MS visual studio. I will be OK as far as I can use sqlcmd and get connection to remote database. At least I can prove to the developers it's not my problem. What do I need on the box?

thanks

Hi,
What about SQL server workstation installation? Do you need that installed at every client machine which need access to remote SQL database?

Is it same like Oracle client installation which have all libraries, dlls,SQLnet files & sqlplus client side utility needed to carry a remote database connection?

Many Thanks
