Can someone tell me what the "daily inventory" job is?
As you can see in the screenshot this job's status is missed every time.

Is there something I need to configure?
What exactly does this job do and is it of use?

Its the INVENTORY of the targeted device. It will inventory the standalone tape drive, library , slot or backup to disk folder.
Whether you need it or not depends on your environment and the requirements.
To give you an example
You have a single standalone tape drive where the backup runs daily on a new or different tape.
The backup is scheduled but the tape is manually replaced in the tape drive.
This is when you would want to schedule an inventory job(you can call it whatever you want )  targeted on the standalone tape drive to run before the backup runs so that the tape information is also consistent ( else the job can fail )
