phpMyAdmin - CHARINDEX does not exist

I am getting an error in phpmyadmin. When I try to run this query:

SELECT LEFT( name , CHARINDEX( ' ', name ) - 1 ) FROM `jos_users`

I get the error:
#1305 - FUNCTION rrcna.CHARINDEX does not exist

I thought that CHARINDEX was a standard function. Do I need to somehow install this function?

Thanks
