Hi Experts,

How can I make a custom text area in a word press theme?  What I'd like to do is have two small areas that carry a bit of text.. like the captions shown in the attached image.  I'd like these text areas to be part of the template so they can persist through each page and be editable through the WP admin panel.

How can this be done?

You can use the sidebars function to add the boxes. You can also try custom meta boxes. To set up your own custom meta boxes is a little out of the realm of a simple tutorial. You might want to try a plug-in and as you become more familiar with them you can create your own.

Here is a good meta box plugin:
This is more of a pre-built meta box sample rather than a plug-in:

A pure plug-in:
Custom Text Boxes (just needs CSS adjusted to match yours:

This might be your best bet (Custom Content Blocks):
