Laptop keyboard not working even in bios - usb keyboard works

I have an HP G72-250us laptop running Windows 7 and the built-in keyboard is not working at all. However, the lights on it for num lock and wifi appear to be lighting up correctly. It doesn't work even in the bios. However, an external usb keyboard is working fine.

I already tried resetting the bios to default options, updating the bios, running system restore, and replacing the keyboard all with no avail.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

could be the keyboard controller on the motherboard (= new mobo)

Hi,

That's the only thing I could think of but I wanted to check here first. If no one else has an idea by tonight I'll accept that as the solution.

Alright, I guess given that no one else has an idea, that seems like the most likely problem. Thanks for your response.

Thank you for your response - while it's not certain whether there is a less drastic solution, your opinion makes me feel much more comfortable telling this to my client.

well, since it happens in bios, it can't be a driver problem; tx for feedback
