Images cause OWA to logout

We are experiencing a very strange behavior with Outlook Web Access running under Exchange 2003.

On many machines in our environment, when a person receives an email with an image (so far I have only noticed the problem with embedded jpgs), the email displays a Red "X" where the image should be.  If the user clicks on that email, they immediately receive the OWA sign in page in the preview pane.  Their credentials are not accepted if they try to login.

Subsequent attempts to read other emails results in the same login page to be displayed.  The only fix is to close the browser completely and log back in.

I've seen it happen with IE7 and IE8 on the client machines.

Any help is appreciated.

Really strange behaviour. Have you applied the lastest service pack and hotfixes on Exchange 2003?

Seems this could fix your issue. You need to request the hotfix from MS:
