Trying to see a MyBook Live drive across a VPN

I have setup a MyBook Live External Hard Drive on a network.  I am used to buying the type that plug into a USB slot on a computer but this model uses an ethernet port and becomes a device on the network.  It is discoverable on the network locally but when I vpn from a network, I cannot see it or find it using a UNC.
I read something about enabling WINS but I have no idea what that entails.  I know where WINS is enabled in Network Connections but don't know what specifically to enable or if that will even work!
Any ideas?

You will need to enable WINS for your VPN tunnel, not just your local network connection. Usually done in your Firewall or Server. Depends what you are connecting to.

I was afraid of that.  They don't have the password for there NetGear firewall router that they connect through....oh well...that is another problem to deal with.
Thanks for the help.
