Excel spreadsheet slow to open or crashes application when opened from a mapped drive

Some users are having trouble opening an Excel spreadsheet from a mapped drive. It is slow to open or crashes the app.
If they copy the file to the desktop it opens fine.  Other users can open the file with no problem.
They are all using office 2003

It is more than likely that an Excel update (Office File Validation) is causing the slowness with accessing Excel files from server resources. Other E-E members have experienced this exact same thing. Fixes are noted below in the Microsoft KB below:
