I keep trying to install sql 2005 and management studio under windows 7 but am getting the infamous error 29506.  The kb article says to  change the permissions on C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\. But that directory does not even exist on my system.

I'm a win7 newbie.  So don't rule out the possibility of silly user errors :)

Are you using CD for the installation?

Not sure if this is what did it, but I navigated to c:\program files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL . Then took ownership of the folder:  Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner  and suddenly it's working.  Go figure ..

Yeah, it's a lot to get used to.  Just wish I'd guessed they meant c:\program files (x86)\ and not c:\program files\  sooner ;-)
