Windows Server Update Services SP1 installation on Win Server 2003 Small Bussine Server

I have the windows Server Update Services SP1 console installed on my 2003 Small Businness server but under the "servers administered from this console" section in the console it is blank and I am not sure what server it wants to connect to as the sql server is on the machine I installed windows Server Update Services SP1 on?

Please help me figure this out - thanks.

What happens when you right-click the "Update Services" or go to the Actions Pane and select "Connect to computer" and try to connect to this machine?

Verify that the Update Services service is running on the machine.

Have you already rebooted after install?

OK so I checked the update service and it was set to automatic but it was not on so I started it and then I ran the console to see if there was any change but there was not - when i try to add the computer name of the server to connect to I got the same error i got in the past.

I am also revieing the microsoft step by step installion instruction to ensure all pre requisites are met for my 2003 windows server small business server.

So far ASP.NET was installed in add remove windows components.

Ok, so is SQL Server service running? I recommend restarting the server. That should start the required services in the correct order.

under services for SQL i have:

sql server (backup)                              off
sql server active directory helper         off
sql server browser                               started
sql server vss writer                             started

Well, then. It seems you have an SQL server installed. The SQL server service is named "sql server (backup)" in your case. Looking at its name I would assume that the SQL server comes from some backup software maybe.

During WSUS install you should have been asked which SQL server to use. Did you specify this local one? Anyway, you should try to start this SQL Server (Backup) service and afterwards restart the Update Services service. Then check the WSUS MMC again if you can connect.
