Distributed Systems

Hi

I was reading an article on distributed systems. As per the article - "A distributed system consists of a collection of autonomous computers, connected through a network and
distribution middleware."

My query is
1. What do you mean by autonomous computers
2. What is distribution middleware
3. If we talk about multiplayer gaming then what is the distribution middleware

Kindly advice

Regards

1. autonomous computer is a standalone computer, with a standalone OS, etc.
2. distribution middleware would be software, algorithms, etc. that run on multiple machines via a network, intelligently (hopefully) distributing tasks to different machines in parallel and coordinating the results.
3. the game executables, often in client & server configuration.  For example, in a FPS you may run around in circles and light yourself on fire; your input and the physics of your character will be handled by your PC, and your position, orientation, condition, etc., will be passed to the peers and/or server so that other players can see you and attempt to gun you down.
