Clients lost coummunication with domain and internet

The other morning i came into work and had one of my sub-nets that were unable to connect to the Intranet, internet, and a few other network resources. It was not every end user on that sub-net but sporadic. Checking the event viewer there was errors logged for W32tm and ntpclient. the only way i was able to correct this was by assigning them static IP's and then updating the NIC drivers or running the fix solution 50492. Once i did that i could reset the NIC for DHCP and the machines seemed fine. The question i have is what could be the root of the cause from one day they are working and the next not able to communicate with the domain. I should also mention that before the fix i was able to get the machines to certain network resources by IP. If there is any one who could let me know what proactive solution i could implement.
