For taking pictures of what?  Sports action?  During the day, or at night?  What kind of lens are you going to use with it?  How much are you willing to spend?  Are you willing to carry it, if it is a large DSLR?  If you can answer these questions, we can narrow down the possibilities.  I recommend www.dpreview.com to see how it is evaluated.

You still haven't mentioned the important budget number - cameras sell for all kinds of prices and have all kinds of features.  If you are really picky about image quality, nothing less than a true DSLR with removable lens will suffice.  For sports, the compact digitals have an inherent problem of shutter lag, which means there is a 1/2 sec or so delay after you press the shutter, which will cause you to miss the shot.  On the other hand, they are easier to carry around with you everywhere, so you will be able to take pictures when desired.  I favor Canon compact digitals, since I think they have better image quality and are easy to use.  I have both a Canon S90 and a Canon EOS 450 DSLR.
