I got a popup :FTLnSTAT" with the following error message: "An invalid argument was encountered".   If I click OK or close the window, it just keeps popping up again.

Have you tried thoroughly scanning for viruses or Malware?
If no, try downloading & updating Malwarebytes(MBAM), from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Run in normal mode.
Tutorial, if required:

If MBAM won't run, download and run Rkill first.
Do not re-boot after running Rkill, then run MBAM.

If the popup is still there you could try running TDSSKiller:
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip

Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and extract it into a folder
Execute the file TDSSKiller.exe.
Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
Close all programs and press “Y” key to restart your computer.

The above comments were made on the assumption that you may have Malware.
As you're probably aware its not enough to scan only with a resident AV scanner, we often need to use a number of online anti-Malware products.
Then, if the results indicate a clean computer, we can move on ..

This next link may then provide some guidance>
"GENERAL ERROR: An invalid argument was encountered":
