Autodiscover is a feature that was written in to Exchange 2007 and subsequent versions.  It is not available in Exchange 2003.

we used to use a script for Outlook 2003 users that does the same as autodiscover, when they connect to exchange 2003, I am not sure if they still need that script to connect to exchange 2010

I would imagine that you will still need the script because Outlook won't be able to find the Exchange 2010 server without knowing where to look.
