Run the HD manufacturer's diagnostic utility on the HD. You'll find the tool on the UBCD:

I can boot theres no problem there. Customer says it shuts down all of a sudden
I saw the problem in the hardware logs.
I have had the laptop running for a couple of hours and it hasn't shut down yet

check if it made a minidump - and post it (look in windows\minidumps)
if it is not set to make minidumps, enable it : go to device manager\advanced tab\restart settings

if you suspect temperaturte problems, install speedfan to monitor them : http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
If its working, make a backup asap, make a disk image if possible with something like acronis
Your disk might having problem. Better backing up your application to the external drive.
You can test your drive by attach it to different computer (you may need converter for this). If still having the same problem then it is time to get new disk. If not then maybe something wrong with the mother board of your laptop.
