New Mac with OS X and Apple keyboard.  Mac says it can not identify keyboard type.  The sound keys work like function keys.  Is there anyway to fix this issue where the keyboard type is recognized?  It is a wired USB Apple keyboard that was shipped with the unit.

A couple of things come to mind. First open System Preferences and go to the keyboard section to make sure that it's all set OK there. Second, try a different USB port. Third, if you have access to another Apple Keyboard, try that. If none of this works, since it's a new system, you have full Apple tech support which is excellent. I'd give them a shout or if you have a local Apple Store take the keyboard to them and let them test it.

Replacing the keyboard worked, but a new keyboard with a new Mac really should not have to be replaced with an old keyboard.  I feel the problem really lies with OS 10.6.  Very quirky build that causes the mouse on multiple machines to float around on their own all the time.

Agree, but it might also be the hardware. I had a Magic Mouse fail within a few weeks of buying one, but pretty much everything else I have purchased from Apple has been rock solid including several other Magic Mice.
