I need to set a flag on a jqGrid container to select by

I use jqGrid and need to write my own validation routines, since the jqGrid validation is far to slow for our needs. So when I check for duplicates, I need to be able to set a flag for those which are duplicates.  Then it's each to create a jQuery selector to draw those which are duplicates with a red frame.

Can I set a flag on an element I did not create?

Thanks.

jqGrid has created elements which contain data populated with AJAX from an MVC3 Controller Action. I need to find an available property I can use for my own purposes.

If I find one with FireBug, how can I be sure it's not used by the jQuery library?
