New web development - what tools/platform?

Hello,

We are about to start development of a new web application.  We have a blank piece of paper with regards to tools, platform, methodology.

The web application will be used by a large group of users, but its not something that will sit on the internet and available to everyone.  i.e. we know the user and can control any installation, scripts, runtimes etc.

Any suggestions?

What about cost?

If you have a limited budget then going with linux, mysql, php is a good option. You tend to be able to do allot with that scenario.

If you have money you can go with windows servers with asp , ms sql. Or even my personal favourite Windows servers and Coldfusion.

All the scenarios have there pros and cons. Its also dependant on who is developing it for you? What are they best at programming with?

ASKER

we have a budget but our experience is with ISS so i guess we will go for that.

we will either be re-training soem staff who have had some web development with Intrawed/JS/Delphi, or hiring in some consultants.

Basically we want to have a stable app developed with tools that have support and plenty of third party components etc..
