Folder-based metadata in Sharepoint 2010

I have a library on SharePoint 2010 with multiple subfolders named after specific users. Is it possible to automatically assign a meta for a document based on a folder it is placed in?

Example. Here is a sample of my subfloders:
- John Doe
- Vicky Smith
- Jane Thoa

When a document is uploaded to a John Doe subfolder I would like it to get a value "John Doe" in a custom column "Owner". I would like to use it later in a workflow. Let me know if it is possible and how to do it.

Thx

Yes, you can do this.

- Go into the settings for the Document Library.
- Under General Settings, click "Column default value settings"
- In the "Location to configure" on the left, click the folder "John Doe"
- In the right, click the link for "Owner" and set the default value

Now anything uploaded in that folder will be defaulted with John Doe in the Owner column.
