I'm going to have throw some guesses here based on my experience with Nero Vision and WLMM, I used Pinnacle briefly but preferred the other tools,
Here's how it works
If he is creating a new project then the locations of his files is intact as he is still in the process of creating a video importing etc.
Once this is saved then the location of the files used in this project is important.
If he deleted these files used off his USB drive then the integrety of this saved project is in trouble of course.
When he reloaded his project he would have seen an error of sorts that some files are missing and Pinnacle needs them so he gets an option to ignore or manually relocate them.
That is the only choice here. Ignore them and start again without them and save a new project
 or find them manually..

If the files directories is still intact then it maybe the images/video used
I'd need to know what they are.
Some Cameras record in special formats that the timeline doesnt recognise so it's blank or no preview is available.
