Grid Command inside Update panel gives error after having worked for years

I have a gridview inside  update panel that I have been using for a couple of years now but all of a suddon, I am getting this error when selecting a row and doing a responce.redirect:
r: Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManagerParserErrorException: The message received from the server could not be parsed.
I am not sure what I could have changed to get the error but removing the update panel resolves the error. I have this scenario on several pages and they all give the same error. Any ideas?
