Is it possible to make a Java program with web start or php program that reads out all the hardware specs?

Like:

What OS do I have?
What processor do I have?
Total amount of memory?
Total amount of free memory?
Software installed: (like mysql server, exchange server, ...)
Hard disks:
    Total diskspace
    Free diskspace
    amount of rpm

So that when you visit a website and you click on, what are my specs, it reads out the information.

Easiest way would be to use Web Start yes. It would have to be a signed app. You could Runtime.exec something like hwinfo

But then hwinfo needs to be installed on the computer who is running it?

Can't if be that it could be like http://www.whatismyip.com/? So that no hwinfo needs to be installed.

That's not a good analogy ;)

If you want to avoid installing stuff (and i don't blame you) then the following alternatives might help

a. use the hardware info options that are common to Linux without special apps. This would either be the /proc filesystem or common utilities that use /proc in most cases
b. try to get a statically-linked version of hwinfo so that no installation is needed
