I assume you mean they don't want to use the lotus notes client software and just want to use gmail web service for recieving and sending mail.

Since that service is setup using a specific gmail. account I believe it can only send out using the email address it was setup with.

You can forward mail to a gmail accoutn automatically by addign forwarding address in the address book.

You would have to migrate everything for everybondy into a google mail server accoutn to allow sending out using the web service.

If it is just a client thing, then have they looked at other mail clients as Domino supports many ways to conenct to the serevr and send/receive mail other than the Notes client.
What you are asking is whether Lotus Notes can be set up as a POP3 client like Outlook and linked to any POP3 account. Yes, it can, just like Outlook. It's done during the setup of the client where you enter the outgoing and incoming servers of the mail provider, which you can get in the FAQ on their website. Here are good step-by-step instructions: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/dominowiki.nsf/dx/24062009215400WEB49C.htm

Synchronization between Google and Lotus Notes (if you are thinking of using two parallel addresses) is only possible for non-email items, such as calendar, contacts, and to dos (http://www.companionlink.com/google/lotusnotes/). Email between these two separate domains, if you want users to use both, can only be handled by forwarders, as doninja already suggested.

I do not believe it is advisable to allow people to continue to use their gmail accounts: You have no control over the use (separation of personal and business content), over SPAM and viruses. You have no central control function to manage the accounts in case a person leaves or goes on vacation. You do not have a uniform company image towards the public. You have no control over signatures. Worst of all, emails and attachments are stored on servers on the Internet which you cannot control. Finally, it looks cheap for a company to be using gmail accounts.
Well reading OP again it could be one way or the other :)

The user does not like Lotus and would like the "Cloud" of gmail... He would like his email address to look like @company.com and go to his @gmail account
Webmail for Lotus Notes and Lotus Notes Traveler are two options for getting the cloud. Webmail in particular resembles all the common POP3 consoles, like Yahoo and Gmail.

If you want to advertise the @company.com address, you must set up mailboxes on the Domino server and individually configure forwarders inside each mailbox to send all email from @company to @gmail. (Since Gmail servers are not Domino servers and not in a trusted domain, you cannot use the mail-in db function to forward mail without having to set up a person record.) This leaves you with the problem that users replying to email will have a reply-to address of @gmail.com. Changing a reply-to setting is always managed by the mail server on which the account resides, in this case Gmail.

Is a seamless solution between the two domains possible? No.

Is what the user likes more important than what the CEO likes? Aren't you wasting your time here?

You could propose iNotes, the way to access your mail directly on the server via a browser.
