how to create unique ID for a customer before directing him/her to paypal

How can we create a unique ID for a customer before the customer is directed to paypal and retreving this ID if the payment is successful. I am usnig .net

thanks for this. Can you give me an exmaple where we have passed a unique ID to paypal site and retreived it after the paypal payment

pass it in the custom field (see page 116 in the attached file) integration-guide.pdf

from the attached file I guess its the invoice variable i need to set but i m looking for an example how can  you set it at runtime in c# and retreive it

I'm not sure invoice number is the field you need to use.

you have a field named custom
if you set it in the initial request you will get it after the transaction completes

I did it very long ago and don't remember exactly how to do it (I have used this document). to test in the sandbox there you can play with it as much as you want
