Save As PDF, with bookmarks included

A client has asked whether it is possible to automatically create 'bookmarks' in the PDFs generated by Filemaker.  I can see how it is manually done within Acrobat, but cannot think of a way of making it happen through Filemaker.

Has anyone accomplished this (without the use of a plugin)?

Hmmm...well, I recall being told that FileMaker, Inc. Licensed the entire Acrobat library for inclusion within FM 7 and later, but the question is how to access it (this sounds like a question for someone with inside FM knowledge like Darren Terry or Ray Colgon). Productive Computing makes the PDF Manipulator plugin, but my reading of the documentation is that it doesn't do anything with bookmarks. Alqemy's FMP-PDF toolkit is quite old (probably FM6) and doesn't mention bookmarks either.

Maybe someone will chime in with a solution. I'm definitely interested to know...

Thanks for your fast reply willmcn.  I was thinking, if anyone knows, willmcn will...  :o)

It is an interesting question and I am also very keen to hear from anyone who knows of a way.

I checked with Chad Novotny at the Support Group and he said he wasn't aware of any direct way to do it. He suggested possibly using Applescript and Acrobat. I opened up the Applescript Dictionary in my older version of Adobe Acrobat Standard 7.0 using the Applescript Editor and there is a pretty extensive library there that looks like it includes the option to create bookmarks. My guess would be that if you were creating long documents with bookmarks that appear in a consistent and calculable way, that you could script the file PDF creation and then have an Applescript to tell Acrobat to open and modify the file via an Apple Event from FM. I don't think it's a trival project unless someone has really good knowledge of FM, Applescript and Acrobats scriptable functions.

Thanks very much for your help willmcn.  The user who needs to do this is on a PC, so Applescript isn't going to be a viable option, however, it is good to know that this is a possible avenue for exploration should it come up again.  Best wishes.

I'll put out one more email query to someone I know at FMI just to see if I can get a response from an engineer there with any other insights.

Here's the semi-official answer from someone inside FileMaker, Inc.:

The short answer is no because linking in PDF's are like links on a webpage. You click a link and it takes you to that specific place. FileMaker layouts don't have that same type of text link to a specific place on the same layout, therefore we don't create bookmarks. It's not that we can't with the libraries we use, we don't because that paradigm doesn't exist on a FileMaker layout.
