Image Effect Photoshop

I am trying to mimic this effect from a template I got to adapt to the website, I havent used photoshop that much so I was wondering what was the  process to create this effect

I use GIMP, but I found this tutorial for Photoshop: How to Create a Transparent Gradient in Photoshop. If you play around with the settings, you should be able to get the desired effect...
