how do i query to get the maximum characters in a field

I  need to know what is the largest number of characters in a field
I know how the field is defined. But I don't know the largest value that is used from all the records in that table

does anyone know how I can query for this info. I know it is easy to find max with number. Is ther a way somehow to do the same for characters

select max(length(your_field)) from your_table
