want to cahnge sys and system password on 11g .

I need to change sys and system password on 11g. Whats the right method. Please help.

You just need to be aware of any applications that might have this information stored like OEM Grid Control and some backup products agents.

if you don't have the alter user system privilege you won't be able to execute those commands though

If you don't know what those passwords are now, you can use this syntax to start SQL*Plus and log in as sys without providing a password:

sqlplus / as sysdba

Then you should be able to run both:

alter user sys identified by [new_password];
and:
alter user system identified by [new_password];

you need to be logged in as a member of the OS DBA group to log in as sysdba.
