Quickbooks Pro for Win7 - can I use a used copy of Quickbooks 2010, 2011 or 12

I see downloadable copies of Quckbooks Pro with registration and key information for less than the cost of new Quickbooks Pro.  Will these work or is it a scam?  How about used copies.  I don't care about registration, just being able to use these on one computer.  Also, why is Quickbooks 2011 often more expensive than 2012?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's all going to depend on who you buy from as far as them working vs. being a scam. All I can suggest is that you do your homework on the seller first.

I would never suggest buying a 'used' copy. Intuit does take how many times a registration number is used and if they deem it excessive they will block it from registering. No registration means no program after 30 days. (Or 30 opens if you go back far enough.)

I have to assume that 2011 is more expensive because 2012 is brand new and is still running sales. Just because Intuit will offer 20% off (or whatever amount) on their current product, doesn't mean they are going to offer that to people that have already purchased those extra copies of 2011.

If you truly don't need 2011, go for 2012. Some of the new features aren't available in Pro, but it's a far better program than 2011. (IMHO)

There is a two step registration process in QuickBooks. First there is a key to install and then there is an activation process that keeps a licensing file active with Intuit's servers. This is mostly for payroll.

So if you intend to use payroll, you probably should buy new. If you do not care about Payroll, updates or support, you probably can buy used. I do not recommend it and echo the comments above.

The Quickbooks is for a client of mine.  Yesterday I went to buy a Dell Vostro desktop online and saw that I could get Quickbooks Pro 2012 for $135 through my Dell Partner Account. I jumped on it.  Very tough economy for small businesses.  I try and save customers money whenever I can.
Thanks to both of you for your comments.
