Server 2003 Roaming profiles between windows 7 and XP

I am having an issue with roaming profiles between windows 7 and XP, I can get roaming profiles to work on both systems by editing the profile address in active directories see below.

“\\server\userprofile” works with XP
“\\server\userprofile\” works with windows 7

I need this to work for both windows 7 and XP as the users roam between the 2 OS’s. I don’t believe this to be a permission issue as I can get it to work for either OS depending on how I setup the profile address as stated above.
When the user logs in he/she gets given a temp profile and I get event error 1521 Windows cannot locate the server copy of the roaming profile.
Any help would be much appreciated.
