I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I haven't tried this since I have an HTC Droid but they claim it works well and looks like an easy to understand procedure:

the other thing to try if kevin's option doesn't work:
Uninstall superuser
Download the correct version of superuser zip from this site:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
and put it in the root of your SD card

Turn off your device and boot into recovery, then choose install zip file from recovery.  Choose the superuser zip file and install.

Then reboot and check to see if you now have root access

That message indicates a permissions issue.  I suggest you take ownership and set appropriate perms to tun the file.

AS for @snailcat's response: check this link -> (has some weird audio in the background...) http://www.askmefast.com/How_to_put_the_motorola_backflip_in_recovery_mode-qna290605.html
