Word 2007 & 2010 - Use of BAR TABS

Dear People:

I'm looking for opinions and perhaps some web links here...

Why would Microsoft introduce a BAR TAB.  It seems that you could accomplish the same task using a table with selectively-enabled borders.

    The vertical lines produced by the bar tab do not affect the text, nor does the text affect them in the way the table cell boundaries do.

    They are like drawn vertical line Shapes, but they can be guaranteed to stay in place from the top to the bottom the paragraphs to which they apply.
