Exchange Mailbox too large

We have a customer with a user mailbox that has become unresponsive due to its size. The mailbox is over 14GB. We found that an issue with his blackberry duplicating contacts over and over again - he now has over 750,000 contacts.

We have stopped the BB from syncing but now his mailbox is mostly unresponsive, and the contacts folder never displays at all.

We have logged the user on to a brand new PC and also tried from their terminal server to clean up the contacts but Outlook just hangs.

We need to remove all the duplicate contacts - is there an exchange command shell we can use from the server (SBS 2008) to remove his contacts folder as all attemps we have tried from the client side have been unsuccessful. We have tried Outlook in Cached and non-cahced mode, deleted and re-created the OST - all to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

If you can, you don't need to open the contacts just do this:

On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
On the Address Books tab, click the address book that you want to remove.
        Click Remove.
        Click Finish.

Thanks - I am trying this now. Outlook has indicated it is not responding but the Outlook process is still ticking over so I will let it go and see if it works.

If it's still unresponsive I would make sure cache mode is not enabled in outlook firstly. I would try exmerging just the required data out delete the old mailbox and re-import

Is Exmerge supported on Exchange 2007? We tried cached mode off and Outlook just hangs indefinitely. Seems it needs the ost file for performance due to the size of the mailbox.

ExMerge will work on Exchange 2007, but must be installed on a 32-bit machine.

Exmerge can then be used to copy content out (I suggest in chunks, say a folder at a time).
When completed successfully, run exmerge again - but removing the contacts data this time.

Connect to the Contacts-PST from outlook, and simply move the desired contacts back into the mailbox folder.

If you have a pst of 14GB, you may try make a copy of the PST (backup), download application like "pst splitter" and then split that huge PST into small chunks of may be 2GB each and then sort out stuff in it.

    Accepted Solution

Problem resolved. We used Ex Mgmt Shell to gradually export the mailbox items one section (folder) at a time to the new profile we created. Very messy problem created by a dodgy blackberry sync to BES.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

The only utility that would work was teh Command Shell for Exchange 2007 - any solution requiring access to the mailbox via Outlook would not work.
