I've exported out a .mov file from Final Cut Pro (shot with a Sony XDCam) and other Macs can't play it.

I've exported out of Final Cut Pro a .mov file of a video shot on a Sony XDCam camera. When I go to play the video on another Mac, all that plays is the audio with no video.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You have two options:

1. Download the correct coded to ALL computers which need to view it.

2. Re-export / convert the .mov using H.264 codec (which should work on all macs); convert to .mp4 (again using H.264) or convert to .avi

How do I find out which Codec I need?

If it was exported using the H.264 codec then the target computers should be able to view this with QuickTime.

Can you check that the export actually used the codec?  Here is a link to the xdcam specific codec which is needed to view xdcam footage.

Can you find the footage/movie you have exported and CMD+i it to get the info up - look in the section which says More Info: and tell me what's listed there.  Mine says this:

Dimensions: 960 x 540
Codecs: AAC, H.264
Color Profile: HD (1-1-1)
Duration 31:12
Audio Channels: 2
Total bit rate: 3,379
