I have an acer tower running Windows XP.   It has a celeron 3.20ghz and 1 gb of RAM.    I tested RAM and Hard drive and both passed.   Within the last 2 months, the computer started having a lot of pausing while playing videos and games liike minecraft.   up to the 2 months ago, it didn't do this.  This has happened running on cabnle at two different locations.   It is also runnning a PCI-E vidoe card.   Any ideas?

Clear up the hard drive, increase disk space, and more importantly defragment the hard drive using built in Defragmenter or http://www.kessels.nl/JkDefrag/

You're likely find you have malware or a virus running in the background.

Try running malwarebytes (malwarebytes.org) and run a full scan. If it closes or doesn't update, you may have footings installed, then try tdss killer.

If you can, reinstall windows on a new drive and see if you can replicate the problem, and rule out a corrupt os

Are you using the auxilliary power connector for the pci-e video card? If so, what kind of card is it? What is the rating of your power supply? Is it original or has it been replaced?

If it is original and you are using the power connector on the video card, the supply may now be struggling to provide the proper level of power or it could be getting noisy from constant overload.

Also, try this:

Click on control panel > display
Select "Settings"
Click on "Advanced"
Click on "Troubleshoot"

Slide the Hardware Acceleration adjustment all the way to the LEFT (This basically turns it off)
Click on ok/apply as needed

Reboot and test. If it is better, then you can either leave it or experiment with the best setting.

It may have worked until two months ago, but you may have installed more applications that run as background tasks since then.  A Celeron 3.2GHz is not that powerful these days, so multitasking may be too much for it.  Try typing msconfig and stop anything that you don't absolutely need and see how it performs.

Norton keeps saying that there is High CPU and High Ram usage.   I shut down everything under MSCONFIG, ran Malwarebytes nad combofix and it has cleaned out all threats.   Do I have to put in a new CPU?

Look in task manager to see what is using the high cpu and memory usage. For what it is worth, Norton itself is a huge resource hog and can really mess systems up.

Has it only recently been installed?

also... what about the powerr supply and the Hardware acceleration setting?

I turned down the hardware accelerator half way.  IF I turned it down to far, I got an error message when trying to start the video game.   No, Norton has been installed for a number of months.   This just started about 1 1/2 months ago.

I will check on task manager to see what coulfd be causing high usage.

Norton says High CPU usage by Java Binary  (or something to that effect).  This game downloads a java applet to play.   But it never had the issue before

A quick search shows that there are many people experiencing similar issues, all in the past 6-8 weeks. It may be the result of a courrupted java update. Your best bet is to go to add/remove programs and completely uninstall java runtime.

reboot if needed and go to www.java.com to download and install the latest version of java.
I believe it is Version 6 Update 27
