Hi All,
I have number of SQL 2005/2008 databases to manage here. I am new to SQL server so I am looking for a white paper or a backup solution from an expert.

I need to address :
1)  How to create a centralised backup environment consisting of hundreds of SQL databases? I should able to schedule backups from this console.
2) How to monitor/report failed backups every night?
3) What kind of compression, encryption technologies are available
4) Also a restore from one server to another should be possible

Many Thanks

    Here is a quick overview

    Install SSMS (
Create maintenance plans for backups with verify (best verification is to restore random databases)
    Setup notification through dbmail
When setting up the backups, you can choose to have compression, there is no encryption with the native method

    Assisted Solution

    Strategy  to stick with MS
mind the recovery model so a transaction log backup could be needed

Many backup programs do have oportunity to backup up databases also but be sure they realy execute the BACKUP statement and do not a worthless file backup.

With a maintenance-plan you can backup all databases of the same instance in action.

OK I got that but how do you schedule at say 100 remote SQL servers and monitor success/failure/space usage of nightly backup?
