Windows 2008 group policy mapped drive, will work on windows 7 and windows 2003 but not windows xp

I have several drives mapped in a mixed windows 7 and windows xp environemnt with a w2k3 terminal server.  On the windows 7 machines and the the terminal server, the drive maps no problem.  However on the xp machines they do not.  also when I do a gpupdate /forceon the windows 7 and term server it asks me to logoff to apply the user policy.  On the XP machines it does not ask me.  All of our xp machines are xpsp3 with no windows firewall enabled.  I have tried both security group and user level targeting.  Also tried checking and unchecking the box for security level context.  Any Ideas on what I am missing?

do they winodws xp machines have the latest group policy extensions installed, they should cause they come from windows update but you may want to check. With server 08 group policy preferences is new so there is some backwards compatibility to be worked out in the xp machines
