Macintosh: Macbook & MacMini

Posted on 2011-10-04

1) I am used to with the Microsoft Window
2) I am not familiar with the Macintosh OS

3) I have 2 Macintosh machines
-First: MacBook (The OS --> Mac OS X 10.6.8)
-Second: MacMini (The OS --> Mac OS X 10.5.8)

4) The Goal: I want to upgrade both computers to Mac OS X Lion
5) My assumptions:
- I will download the "file" (maybe from the vendor) related to Mac OS X Lion
-When downloading the "file", I have to use one of the machine --> say it , I will use the MacBook
- Then, I will create the Bootable DVD for this file
6)The things that I am still confused:
-I will insert "this bootable DVD" at the MacMini
-  I will do the "clean install" with it
- What will be ASKED by the system for the installation at this MacMini?
- Because, I will use this bootable DVD again for the MacBook

7) My questions: is my assumption correct? Can I use the "same bootable DVD (of the Mac OS X Lion) for two different machines? Please explain other related things whenever necessary

8) Thank you

Apple does not provide a DVD disc for the installation Mac OS Lion. You will have to download it from the Mac App Store and Install it from within Mac OS Snow Leopard.

Alternatively you can buy a usb thumb drive from Apple which contains the Mac OS Lion installation files. I would advise against that, since the USB thumb drive is more expensive than the download version. You can actually create your own thumb drive with the software version.

So here is what you do to upgrade to OS X Lion:

Note: This is not a clean install, it will just upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion. Follow these steps:

    1. Use Software Update to update to OS X v10.6.8

    2. Click on the Mac App Store icon

3 Now purchase Mac OS X Lion

    4. The Mac OS X Lion Installer will download to the dock and launch automatically.

    5. Now just follow the on-screen instruction to install OS X Lion

To install Lion on your second Mac you have to follow the same steps as above. The only difference will be, that you don't have to purchase Lion again. Just login to the Mac App Store and download Lion and follow the installation steps above.

If you want to do a clean install, you will have to create a bootable USB drive with Mac OS Lion on it. Here is how:

Note: You need a USB thumb drive with at least 5GB of space. Your USB thumb drive wil be formatted, so backup all your data before you follow these steps:

    1. Click on the Mac App Store icon

    2. Now purchase Mac OS X Lion. The Mac OS X Lion installer will download to the dock and automatically launch. Quit the installation process

    3. Go to the Application folder

    4. Right click on  Install Mac OS X Lion and select Show Package Contents

    5. Go to Conetest, SharedSupport and copy InstallESD.dmg to your desktop.

    6. Connect your USB flash drive to your Mac

    7. Open Disk Utility and drag InstallESD.dmg from your desktop to the left sidebar in the Disk Utilty

    8. Now select your USB thumb drive from the left and click on Partition

    9. Select 1 Partition from the Partion Layout and select Mac OS Extended

    10. Now click on Options and select and select GUID Partion Table, then click Apply.

    11. After your USB thumb drive has finished formatting, click on the Restore tab

    12. Now choose the InstallESD.dmg as the source drive and your usb thumb drive as the destination.

    13. Click Apply. This will copy to boot files to tour USB thumb drive

    14. Now reboot your mac and hold the Option Key on your keyboard during the startup process.

    15. Select Mac OS X Lion as the boot volume.

    16. Now follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X Lion
