"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I don't think that there are other technologies than ado.net (this is just a layer between your program and the database)

Both C# and SQL Server 2008 R2 can connect to the following TYPES of providers:
1. SQL Native Client
2. Oracle

Theoretically, ANY database system that the requesting system has access to (locally or remotely) which implements at least one of these providers can be connected to.
