In IE 8 and 9 it is possible to set some restrictions. 2 of them are the NavBar and ToolBar.

1. NavBar allows to remove the entire address navigation bar (both address field and back / forward buttons).

2. ToolBar allows to disable the back / forward buttons.

Is there a way (in the registry or a C# solution)  to remove or disable the address field in the navigation bar but leave the back / forward buttons enabled?

you may disable/hide toolbar and create a custom toolbar with the back/forward buttons : http://www.add-in-express.com/docs/internet-explorer-toolbars.php
