Wss 3.0 custom combobox column - with lookup values from external database/table

I need to create a custom combobox column in a list.
The source of the lookup values of this combobox will be from a field that belongs to an external database/table outside Sharepoint.
BDC is not an option since not supported in WSS 3.0.

I would appreiciate any help towards this.
